Anchorage serves as the state's primary commercial hub, with Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport ranking as one of the busiest cargo airports in the world for transpolar freight. Pallets must be shipped by barge, air, or the Alaska Highway, making costs significantly higher than the Lower 48. The military presence (Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Eielson Air Force Base), oil industry operations on the North Slope, and fishing/seafood processing along the coast are the primary pallet consumers. Alaska's cold climate preserves wood well but extreme temperatures can make pallets brittle.
